Well I think this whole forum needs a big:

BUMP!

Theres one with footage, Kathy!!! *goes looking* I can't find it... did they take it down? Oh no... here it is; Don't Panic Wink. Hmmm.. I don't mean to be picky, but where is Zaphod's second head? Hold on, is it down his shirt?! And it seems to be... Disneytised or something... Oh well, I'll probably see it anyway. Hey! its being released on a Friday - after the world has blown up? Wink

I was wondering what happened to Zaphod's second head, too. People may mock the one used in the BBC TV series, but at least it was there. It looks as if you only see one at once in the film, from that trailer.

I can't decide if Marvin being small like that is insightful design, and really works, or if Disney have "cutified" him.

Maybe the world ends on the Thursday after the film's release?

Gah! My mom is being cruel! She won't let me read those books anymore! I loved the two I read, which happen to be the first and the fifth because my school library has an awful selection. But I told her I was reading them, and she said I couldn't! And I doubt she'll let us see the movie either, because when the ad comes on she makes us fast forward the movie. Grrrr. Mad

And I'm being tortured, because the guy who sits next to me in Reading class has a colleted form of the books, all in one volume, and he reads it every day. Frown

Why can't you read them? I can't think of anything unsuitable about the Hitchhiker's Guide books. Well, maybe the President of the Galaxy stealing a spaceship he's meant to be launching. And perhaps the character who keeps reincarnating. Or possibly the Award for Most Prestigious Use of the Word * in a Screenplay.

But apart from all that, why can't you read them?

Does she know the movie is being made by Disney Smile ? Would that convince her it must be all right really? And that the books it was based on must be really nice books?

OK, most of you know that I am a huge Pokémon fan. If you do not, well I am telling you know: I like Pokémon. Why would I state such a fact?? and especially here in the Movie topic??? Well, that is for me to know and for you to….ok, so I am going to tell you why in a moment. I just want to state a few more things first.

If you do not know, Pokémon is now in their 7th movie. I have seen them all; each one is just as good as the next. The fact that Pokémon is still airing is a statement that the series, and the phenomenon that it was a while ago is still around, just not is as big a quantity. Some would say that the longer the series lasts, the more boring and repetitive it becomes. While that is true, I think of “The Land Before Time,” I find that Pokémon is keeping the ideas new and original. While it stays within the boundaries that the Pokémon worlds reviles, having to collect them all, having to train, having to deal with Team Rocket every single episode, they find ways of adding something new beyond more Pokémon.

Now that that is over, I will make this short and say that I just finished watching the 7th Pokémon movie last night, “Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys!” I liked it, but I am not sure if any of you all will. The story is aimed more to the people that understand the whole concept of Pokémon. But taking away from the Pokémon theme, as a movie, I though it was interesting. In order to not spoil anything, I will not say anything more. I give it my personal recommendation, even though that is not saying much.

I have no comment on any of the Pokemon movies, I'm afraid, Gibby. Smile

But I am going to see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow this afternoon... y'all seen it? The trailer looks... really interesting, anyway. Big Grin

PM, I think it might have something to do with some of the stuff in the fifth book. Not saying it here, but...

She also doesn't know about any of the "other" stuff I've read, some of which is MUCH worse. (I'm thinking Anne McCaffery and Tamora Pierce, and several other less known authors that I happened to find not-too-appropriate stuff in.)

7 Pokemon movies? I've only seen...5, I think.

I like Yu-Gi-Oh better than Pokemon, but I guess Pokemon is okay.

Lisa-- well, maybe your mom will let you read _Hellblazer_ and watch Constantine. <laughs wickedly>
Seriously, I understand that there are people who object to any use of the f-word in a book, up to and including _Catcher in the Rye_ ... I just don't understand WHY there are people who object so strongly...
Honestly, anything in the Hitchhiker books that could be considered objectionable is handled in such a silly tone that I'm surprised anybody could take it seriously enough to object!

I am half asleep at the moment (I only got four hours worth last night), due to seeing Bride and Prejudice and then going back to a friends house to chat for like ages.

Bride and Prejudice was good. Think 'live action Disney movie' and you've got it down pat (and before PM says anything - live action Disney cartoon. I know they do live action stuff too Razz). Lots of singing, dancing, and every random from the street joining in the songs. I haven't read the book yet, but from what my friends told me, it followed the story line pretty well.

What isn't appropriate about them, Lisa? The storylines in general? or does you mum think they're too 'old' for you? I can't think of what could be unsuitable about Tamora Pierce and Anne McCaffery, whose worlds are clearly fantastical and/or in a different universe (I know Anne McCaffery's are set in this one). But yeah.

Anne McCaffrey? *chokes and splutters*

Um. possibly what Lisa could mean is the implied sex? And a lot of kissing? 'cause that's all I can think of, myself. Oh, wait, hang on, in the book of short stories one of them was about two guys making out. Um, I can't remember what the book was called, but possibly you mean that?

As for Tamora Pierce, I'm going with implied sex and snogging again. Wink Oh, and nudity.

But I agree, it's pushing it. I know there are people who dislike any suggestion of romance in a book... but I think it's, well, a bit strange.

Sry but I so can not comment on Pokemon without choking. I really want to see B&P now, but I can't for at least another week. Not COOL!
Can't wait for Hitchhiker's Guide. I didn't know Disney was doing it. Huh. I'm really not up to date on that kinda stuff.

Yes, Tui, it's odd, thinking of McCaffrey as verboten material, but there is a lot of implied sex, and some not-so-implied, once I think about it. Restoree, for example, springs to mind, since it really is nothing so much as a romance novel with an SF setting.

talkingbeast: just what does Hellblazer have to do with Constantine? Smile Sorry, sorry. I just can't help wishing they'd cast Jude Law or somebody else blond and British (the way JC is supposed to be) instead of Keanu Reeves.

I am soooo waiting for Sin City. The trailer's been a treat.

Alla, re: Bride & Prejudice, instead of "live action Disney animated", I'd have used the word "musical." Also "Bollywood." Also chickflick. ;-)

Well, to be truthful, I've only read 4 Anne McCaffery books in my life, due to the fact that my mom forbid me to read them after she caught me reading Dragonsong and Dragonsinger.(But I went ahead and read two more anyway.) But yeah Birdhead, I think what you said would be right. She doesnt' have too much of a problem with the language, cussing, etc.
And she has no clue who Tamora Pierce is. I don't really tell her what I read, because I'm afraid of her banning me from certain books.

Well, yeah, but I wasn't thinking of Restoree... hardly anyone's read that, and I confess it's not the sort of thing one just picks up, is it? The majority of readers will be into the Pern books first, or some other Mccaffrey. Big Grin I'd totally forgotten about it, though- I can actually see why someone who'd read it might be uncomfortable with their kid reading it, depending on the age.

On the other hand, she took Dragonsong and Dragonsinger off you?? Frown But they're an empowering tale of a young woman who fights for her destiny, shaking of the shackles of a conservative patriachal regime!!1!!!11!

Or something. (Wow, shaking off shackles sounds really crazy in the head. Wink )

Uh-oh, cussing, heaven forbid...
... sorry, that was really nasty. Frown I didn't really mean that how it sounded...

*amused* Unless she dislikes fantasy in particular, though, surely there can't be much wrong with Tammy... I suppose maybe the Song of the Lioness, but the Daine books are pretty much innocent, and as for the Circle of Magic...!

just what does Hellblazer have to do with Constantine?

Constantine is the main character in the Hellblazer comics. The whole concept of Constantine started within the comic word, and he is now the star of his own comic series. If you want more information on Hellblazer and / or Constantine, you can check out the DC: Vertigo website.

To everyone that sayed something about the Pokemon movie.

Well, I know that Pokemon is not as big as it use to be. The fact is, I find Pokemon more interesting, in my opinion, then Yu-Gi-Oh. However, everyone has their own feelings on this subject. I was just stating that even though the movie is in the Pokemon franchise, I found it to be a good movie, from a movie perspective. I value all of your views on this subject, so keep it up, praise it or despise it, I do not care. As long as I like it, it will always be a topic of mine.

And to make this post fit with the rest of this topic, I just finished watching another anime called Metropolis. This anime has an interesting art style that is unlike any I have seen previously in an anime. It has a cartoony style, but the story stays within a realistic, yet fantasy setting.

Just as with the Pokemon movie, I am not going to state a lot about it for fear of spoiling anything about it. I like how it ended, which was differernt from what they were leading you too believe, and the characters, in my opinion, are easy to get to know.

I give this one a 4/5 for its creativity and uniquness. This is a highly recomended movie from me to all that enjoy anime in some form or fashion.

Thanks, Gibby, I actually knew about Hellblazer, I was just joking around. (Actually, as a sign of how old I am, I can actually remember the creation of the Vertigo line with Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing. The high point of Fiddler's Green for me was meeing Karen Berger.) The main character in the Hellblazer comic book, John Constantine, was drawn to look as much like Sting as possible. He's British. He's seedy, older, worn down by evil. (I mean JC, but in retrospect...)

And they cast him as Keanu Reeves and changed him into an American for the film. Hence my take that the movie really doesn't have that much to do with the comic book. (can you imagine if Spielberg had gotten away with making Harry Potter American and casting him as Haley Joel Osment?) Smile OTOH, the guy who writes the Bags'n'Boards blog for Variety said it holds pretty true to the Hellblazer storyline, so I might still go see it.

YES I CAN, and now I AM. You are a horrible person. *scratches brain out with spoon*

So I saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, the first one of my must-see movies this summer (*eyeroll* Yes, I know it's March now. I can't believe summer is OVER *weeps)

Anyway, it's really good! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Some beautiful cinematography, a relaly interesting style; non-existent plot, but it really doesn't matter because for once the setting of the movie totally pulls it off, along with a very fine Angelina Jolie cameo. Big Grin Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow were, of course, also very good AND added bonus, it had Sir Laurence Olivier in it! That's right! (spoilers) The most totally brilliant thing about that was, of course, that they had a guy who's been dead for twenty years playing... a guy who's been dead for twenty years. Big Grin I thought it was good, anyway.

Also, it had some extremely cool gadgets. Who wouldn't want to have a plane like Sky Captain's? It's like the stuff Bond gets from Q, but with better artistic direction and set in the thirties. Big Grin So yeah, go see it, y'all.

I suppose it's not showing in American theaters anymore. But still.

Sorry, sorry! Didn't mean to make you scrub your eyeballs, there.

Yes, to everything you said about Sky Captain, except I really didn't like the Olivier-as-proto-Nazi overtones and empty plot/characters. I still say that The Rocketeer was better, if you're going for a Republican-serials/1930s feel adventure movie with cool gadgetry. Or even the old Fleisher Superman cartoons. But I'm weird.

Oh no, she reads it as much as I do, and really likes it too. It's my dad who doesn't like fantasy (grr Mad), and he's made me paranoid about people taking away my books, so I don't let ANYONE (except my very close "friends") know what I'm reading. We own a LOT of Anne McCaffery books, I just can't read them. I think she didn't want me reading McCaffery in general because I'd eventually find one of her not-so-appropriate books. And she's...okay...with cussing, as long as it's not in the extreme.

I was lucky. My parents never cared what I read, so long as my grades were good, and I was going into engineering. Smile

Shhhh. Keep it under your hat, but....this site has a trailer for Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Wererabbit.
