I remember that a while ago the song "Rush" by Aly and Aj reminded me of the series.
Lyrics for "Rush"
There was just something about these parts:

"Into your head
Into your mind
Out of your soul
Race through your veins
You can't escape
You can't escape

Into your life
Into your dreams
Out of the dark
Sunlight again
You can't explain
You can't explain"

and the other part:

"Don't let nobody tell you your life is over
Be every color that your are
Into the rush now
You don't have to know how
Know it all before you try."

Something about that just reminded me of wizardry, and about some of the dreams Nita has had in the more recent books.

Ok, just to reiterate what I was saying elsewhere, please quote excerpts (like kk did), or link to full lyrics (like wen). Please do not post full song lyrics. And we'd really rather read what you have to say about the lyrics and how they remind you of the YW books.

I think the one song lyric that reminds me of YW, just because it's one with magic and flying in it is Wicked's "Defying Gravity": "I'm through accepting limits / Cuz someone says they're so / Some things I cannot change / But till I try I'll never know..."

I love that song! And now that you mention it, it does remind me of YW. Have you seen the musical Wicked? My mother got so sick of the songs after I played them constantly for about a week. Then she was even more annoyed when she found out that the lady at my church who I help out, also plays them constantly.

I thought this was an interesting question, so I went looking in my iTunes list, and one of the first things I saw was Waters of March, composed by Brazilian Tom Jobim (the version I have was sung by Lani Hall.) The original portugese version is about the 'waters of march,' which come to Brazil at the end of Summer--they're a vital part of the weather cycle, and therefore of the people's life cycle in Brazil. (I looked this up, btw--on Wikipedia...) He wrote the English version himself, and it was changed around some so it would make sense/still be poetic in translation. He also changed it so it would be about spring, instead of the end of summer.

Ok, I'm rambling. Anyway, the lyrics are here: http://www.brazzil.com/p08sep01.htm
Along with a bunch of stuff about Jobim.

The song basically talks about life and the struggle to go through it and be happy, etc. It's a sort of collection of images:
"It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,
It's a trap, it's a gun"

Images for verses and verses. It talks about very life-fulfilling things (hope, and 'the promise of spring,') and mundane things--mules, etc. It also has some sad things: a "body in bed," knives, guns. And then there's the river imagery, furthering the idea that life flows, it's always different, and you can't keep it from going on and on until it gets to the end.

Anyway, this reminds me of the YW series because that seems to be what the books are all about: you try as hard as you can to keep life going, and for a while you're able to, but eventually you lose and things die. I think it was Tom who said (And I'm paraphrasing here) that wizards keep trying to save this universe, and it's worth it to keep it alive even for just a little bit longer, because we don't know if another one will arise from the ashes of this one. And that's why I think Waters of March is like YW.

Oh, and please don't tell my professors I referenced wikipedia... Roll Eyes

This is a little back to front, but there's a description of Kit and Nita casting a spell which puts me in mind of two treble voices singing in harmony. I've been trying to think of a good example, and the only one I can come up with at the moment is the "Pie Jesu" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem". Trouble is, on the recording I have, that piece is (I think) done by Sarah Brightman double-tracking, which isn't quite right. The point is that the voices should be very close but different, not the same. I'm sure I've heard a performance where two young singers performed it, and that's what's lodged in my memory.

For some reason I've also been thinking of a song I read in a book called "Troll Bridge" by Adam Stemple and Jane Yolen.

Just the chorus reminds me of YW:

"So tell me quick
If I've been heard,
Else, maim with a phrase,
Kill with a word."

It reminded me about how it was said in the YW books how after reciting an almost complete spell, it only takes the last word for one of the wizards to kill. (That song, by the way, is entitled "Teller, Teller.")

Another line from another song (titled "Compact") from that book also made me think of YW:

"I give to you
A promise made
From fate to fate
The game is played
The music slides on
Note by note
We look for love
We live on hope."

I see it sort of symbolically, if I look at the words closely. I was thiking of the promise meaning the Oath, and the music could mean the sound of a spell being recited, or something like that.

The third verse of that song reminded me about the wizards seemingly endless battle with the LP:

"The war is joined
The bullet milled
The wound is opened
Blood is spilled.
And hate is answered
Fast by hate
The peaceful word
Is spoke too late."

"Believe something and the Universe is on its way to being changed. Because you've changed, by believing. Once you've changed, other things start to follow."

Every time I hear this song I think of DW when Nita made the choice to help the whales....

http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=138931

Darkness, Darkness from the sound track of Ghosts of the Abyss.....

Darkness darkness, long and lonesome
Is the day brings me here
I have found the edge of sadness
I have known the depths of fear

This part reminds me of the struggle Nita had...

Can't believe I didn't see this thread before.

Um, I did a fanart a really long time ago (and tried to write a song fic, but then I got lazy) because I heard this song that reminded me of individual characters from the YW series (Nita, Kit, Dairine, Ronan, Roshaun, Darryl).

"This Is A Call" by Thousand Foot Krutch

She fools all of her friends into thinking she's so strong
But she still sleeps with the light on
And she acts like it's all right, oh
As she smiles again

And her mother lies there sick with cancer
And her friends don't understand her
She's a question without answers
Who feels like falling apart...

Reminded me immediately of Nita during A Wizard's Dilemma and A Wizard Alone. The rest of the song is perfect too.

(And checkout the fanart, it matches up particular lyrics with the character they remind me of: YW - In Summation )

(The fanart also has the complete lyrics of the song, but if you want to look them up in a less distracting form: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/thousandfootkrutch/thisisacall.html)

Wow that song really reminds me of them. I liked the art too it's really cool. That's a very sadd song by the way, almost made me cry!!

I don't know any songs that makes me think of YW yet, but I know I'll probably come across one someday.

EDIT: hmm I seem to have found one

"On Top Of The World"

Look up, the stars are fading
And I am still here waiting to see you again
Be with you my friend
When the moon is gone forever
I hope you're up there somewhere, I'll see you again
Be with you my friend

Cause all the roads they lead to where you are
And all the streetlights shine like they were stars
That's where you are

Let's spend tonight on top of the world
And we can do anything
We can be anything
I'll meet you tonight on top of the world
As real as it seems
You're only in my dreams

Look out across the water
Faces of lonely daughters and mothers who care
But just can't be there
Swear that I will see you someday
I have to find a way To show you I care
Even if you're not there

So I'm following the road to where you are
(Meet you tonight on top of)
The streetlights they will guide me to the stars
That's where you are

Let's spend tonight on top of the world
And we can do anything
We can be anything
I'll meet you tonight on top of the world
As real as it seems
You're only in my dreams

My heart is empty without you
Sometimes you don't know what to do
And I need you tonight
I'll fall asleep and it's alright
Close my eyes and I'll be by your side

Let's spend tonight on top of the world
And we can do anything
We can be anything
I'll meet you tonight on top of the world
As real as it seems
You're only in my dreams

Let's spend tonight on top of the world
(On top of the world)
As real as it seems
You're only in my dreams

Not really sure where that fits in the stories but I thought it reminded me of Kit and Nita's "relationship". It might just be me but yeah.

Do you guys think this song fits with the books? To me, it's perfect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZOWP6QQdRE

Bjork's Aurora

Treading
the glacier head
looking hard for moments of shine
from twilight
to twilight

ahhh...

aurora
goddess sparkle
shoot me
beyond this suffer
the need is great

aurora

ahhh...

aurora
goddess sparkle
a mountain shade
suggests your shape

i tumble down on my knees
fill my mouth with snow
the way
it
melts
i wish
to melt into you

aurora

ahhh...

spark the sun off
spark the sun off
spark the sun off
spark the sun off for me

OK, got a list... haha
This could apply do all the wizards that have to deal with the Lone Power.

So Bring it On- The Cheetah Girls
"I'll sqeeze you, unease you, I'll freeze you,
Alarm you, Disarm you, I'll charm you,
I'll block you, unlock you, I'll shock you

You wanna fight then you'll do it my way.

So bring it on
I'll have you wrapped up around my finger.
So bring it on
When I start wearing you then you'll know for sure
I don't wanna get dangerous
not down with this
it's over with

So listen up cus you ain't messin with me anymore."
It just reminds me of everything they do in the series, the way they help the world to keep spinning.

Up Side down- Jack Johnson
"Who's to say
what impossible
Well they forgot
This world keeps spinning
And with each newday
I can feel a change in everything
And as the surface break reflections fade
But in some ways they remain the same
And as my mind begins to spread its wings
There's no stoppin' curiosity."

Englishman in New York- Sting (but i have the BOCA Vo. 1)
Reminds me of AWH when Dari took her "alien" friends to the mall with Mela.

"Im an alien, Im a legal alien
Im an englishman in New York"

Don't Speak- No Doubt
this song is for Kit to Nita in AWD and for Nita to Kit in AW Alone.

"You and me
We used to be together
Everyday together always
I really feel
That I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end
It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real
Well I don't want to know"

LAST BUT NOT LEAST...
I picked this song because, i love it for one and it reminds me of the secret way Nita feels about Kit without people knowing, even though they do...

I won't say(I'm in love)- Disney's Hercules
"Who'd'ya think you're kiddin'
He's the Earth and heaven to you
Try to keep it hidden
Honey, we can see right through you
Girl, ya can't conceal it
We know how ya feel and
Who you're thinking of

You keep on denying
Who you are and how you're feeling
Baby, we're not buying
Hon, we saw ya hit the ceiling
Face it like a grown-up
When ya gonna own up
That ya got, got, got it bad

At least out loud,
I won't say I'm in love"

Ok thats it, sorry... Dia

NM: ("How strongly are you opposed to grand theft auto?")- A.C.

BD:
(S- "Maybe we should be thinking something like, 'We come in peace.'"
J- "Go for it."
S-"Edward?... Edward, you there? Okay, now I feel kinda stupid."
J- "You sound stupid, too.")

"Stand in the Rain" by Superchic[k]

It really reminds me of Nita in Wizard's Dilemma, especially the part when she's in the first practice universe and she makes it pour down rain. This song totally fits that moment.

"She never slows down.
She doesn't know why but she knows that when she's all alone, feels like its all coming down
She won't turn around
The shadows are long and she fears if she cries that first tear, the tears will not stop raining down

[CHORUS]
So stand in the rain
Stand your ground
Stand up when it's all crashing down
You stand through the pain
You won't drown
And one day, whats lost can be found
You stand in the rain

She won't make a sound
Alone in this fight with herself and the fears whispering if she stands she'll fall down
She wants to be found
The only way out is through everything she's running from wants to give up and lie down."

christmas, having you mention that reminds me of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain":

Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Ok, we got the candidate of hope. Now what?

I thin the song "Drops of Jupiter" fits pretty well. It reminds me of Dairine. Like the part:

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you--even when I know you're wrong

That "even when I know you're wrong" just reminds me of how Dair treats Roshaun, and how they argue constantly. And the choruses have a lot about outer space, so it just sounds a lot like her.

Then there's "We Live" by Superchick:

There's a man who waits for the tests to
See if the cancer had spread yet
And now he asks why did I wait to live 'til it was time to die
If I could have the time back, how I'd live
Life is such a gift
So how does the story end?
Well, this is your story and it all depends
So don't let it become true
Get out and do what we were meant to do

We live, we love, we forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love
We live, we love, we forgive and never give up
Cuz the days we are given are gifts from above
And today we remember to live and to love

It doesn't specifically have anything to do with YW, but it reminds me of WD, and how they all sort of realize that Mrs. Callahan is actually going to die.

Hmmm... Ano... I think, that just in general, "Shadow Games" and "Face up, Face down" sort of go well with battles against the Lone Power. (Who I am in the habit of calling 'Loner' in my head... Don't. Ask.)

I agree, "Drops of Jupiter" reminds me of Dairine and Ro. Not only the part that kk quoted, but also the repeated "Did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?" Although I doubt Roshaun decided to disappear in order to "look for himself", it still reminds me of the feeling of loss Dairine has. And I especially think of Roshaun because of the line that says, "Did you sail across the sun?" Yeah, pretty much everything to do with sun reminds me of Roshaun. Smile

I made a post in the fanart section about this: http://youngwizards.net/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1006092865/m/4781015625

I'd made a fanmix for "The Wizard's Dilemma" and posted it on my LJ (and DA). I also made a mock CD cover and label. The LJ and DA postings have links to the full songs and the full lyrics for most songs.

I got the inspiration from listening to my iTunes on shuffle while reading the last part of TWD, from about where...I think from where Nita finally tells Kit what is going on.

Some highlights from the fanmix:
(usually the "..." means that there is a skip in the lyrics because I don't remember them off the top of my head, or because I'm only quoting select parts of the song)

1. "10,000 Miles" by Mary Chapin Carpenter
- Fare thee well, my own true love...fare thee well for awhile, I'm going away, though it be 10,000 miles...
- This song reminds me of Nita's mom in general

2. "Angels" by Within Temptation
- You took my heart, deceived me right from the start, you showed me dreams, I wish they'd turn into real, you broke your promise and made me realize it was all just a lie.
- This reminds me of the dealings between Nita and the Lone Power

(skip 3 for now)

4. "It's The Fear" by Within Temptation
- It's the fear of the darkness growing inside of me, the day it will come to life, have to save my beloved because my fate is horror and doom
- This reminds me of Nita's struggle in general

5. "My Confession" by OTEP
- I'm at an end...THERE'S NO WAY OUT!
- This reminds me of Nita's struggle in general

6. "Presence" by Envinity
- I'm captured by your presence...
- This song reminds me of when Nita is inside her mom

7. "Pale" by Within Temptation
- Have to try to break free from the thoughts in my mind, use the time that I have, I can't say goodbye, I have to make it right, have to fight because I know in the end it's worthwhile, that the pain that I feel slowly fades away, it will be all right.
- I think that this song captures the mood of the whole book extremely well

8. "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer
- I couldn't resist putting this one, even though the lyrics don't match. It reminds me of Nita's mom talking to the Lone Power

9. "Who Wants To Live Forever" cover of Queen by After Forever
- Who wants to live forever...who wants to love forever, when love must die.
- This reminds me of Nita's mom's decision

10. "Coincide" by Envinity
- Is there something there in your mind that makes us coincide? Sometimes it's hard to ignore how much we we've intertwined...
- This SO reminds me of the LP and Pralaya
